Why Pitumarca is your next international climbing destination
Everyone thinks Machu Picchu when people mention Peru. Even climbers.

Everyone thinks Machu Picchu when people mention Peru. Even climbers. While via ferrata and mountainside sleep pods are getting more attention in recent tourism conversations, Peru is actually also home to world class rock climbing. Peru shares the Andes, the world’s longest mountain range, with six other countries in South America. Everyone talks about Patagonia, not least because of the company that shares the namesake, but take a deeper look and you will see Pitumarca for the equally amazing hidden climbing gem that it is.
What should I expect of climbing in Pitumarca?
Pitumarca is a premier sport climbing destination located over 3000m above sea level. With 200+ routes of excellent limestone and minimal polish, what more does a climber need to hear? Test your ability to climb at altitude while hanging out with local llamas and alpacas. The local climbing community maintains and develops the area. Climbing guides for the area live in town, so you cannot find many better places to connect with the local community, culture, and climbing all at once.
What climbing gear do I need for Peru?
A standard gear set would be 80m of 9.2-9.8mm rope, climbing shoes, chalk, helmet, and harness. As buying gear in Peru can be tough, we strongly recommend planning in advance by connecting with a local guide so they know what you need. Got a pair of shoes you really love? Bring them. While climbing guides in Peru will be outfitted with everything you need for the experience, every climber knows the pain of not climbing in their well-molded Katanas or snug Instincts. Do everyone a favor and bring your favorite chalk and well fitted harness too. Options for chalk can be slim and if you really like your brand, why travel all the way to another country just to cheap out on your friction support? No one likes a hard catch or an ill fitting harness. If you have used rentals at a gym, you don't want that experience again. Climbing guides will have everything you need on hand, but any personal gear will make your experience a better one. Enough said.
